Lungs are very important organs of our body which used to expand and relax several times in a day to bring in the oxygen and expel out the carbon dioxide. An infection in any part of this system is termed as Lung infection.
Causes of a lung infection –
Lung infection is mainly due to a virus or bacteria. Lung infection is mainly of three types: bronchitis, pneumonia, and bronchiolitis.
- The virus responsible for the lung infection is an influenza virus or the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- Bacteria responsible for the lung infection is Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Bordetella pertussis
Types of a lung infection –
It is broadly divided into three categories –
Bronchitis – It is a condition when the bronchial tubes which help to carry the air to the lungs get swollen or inflamed. It is accompanied by coughing and secretion of thick mucus.
Pneumonia – It is a breathing disorder in which there is an infection present in the skin. In this condition, the air sacs are filled up with fluid or pus. However, pneumonia is a life-threatening condition. It can easily infect infants, children and old age people.
Bronchiolitis – In this, there is an inflammation and congestion noticed in the small airways which are known as bronchioles. It commonly affects the lungs of young children and infants.
Symptoms of a lung infection –
Symptoms of a lung infection can vary from mild to severe. Most of its symptoms are similar to cold or flu. Let us discuss some of its symptoms–
- Cough accompanied with thick sticky mucus –
When you cough it helps to remove the mucus from the inflamed airways along with the lung. A cough is a symptom that stays for weeks even though the other symptoms might disappear.
- Pyrexia or fever –
You will feel a fever when your body will try to fight with the infection. In the case of any type of bacterial lung infection, the body temperature may rise to 105°F (40.5°C).
- Throbbing chest pain –
This pain is very intense to bear with. A sharp pain worsens when you are coughing or simply breathing.
- Body pain –
Body pain is also termed as myalgia. Pain in the muscles and back is observed when you have a lung infection.
- Runny nose accompanied with inflammation –
Runny nose with nose redness and inflammation. It is further accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
- Shortness of breath –
In this symptom, you will find difficulty in breathing or you cannot breathe completely.
Diagnosis of a lung infection –

- Pulse oximetry
- CBC with ESR
